SCJ schools come together

St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD, hosted the SCJ Schools in Collaboration Summer Institute June 10-13. This year’s group included and members of Holy Family and Sacred Heart schools from Mississippi, St. Joseph’s Indian School, and St. Martin’s of Tours school from Wisconsin. David Schimmel, director of Dehonian Associates for the US Province, also took part.


World Refugee Day

Monday, June 20, is World Refugee Day. It is a moment that not only highlights the courage, perseverance and resilience shown by refugees in overcoming enormous odds to rebuild their lives but also calls each one of us to do whatever we can, wherever we are to recognize one another as sisters and brothers. Drawing on Pope Francis’s theme of the “Year of Mercy,” in which he challenges us to make this a time to overcome our indifference to the needs of others, the SCJ North American Immigration Committee has created a prayer service to help us reflect on the issues of migration.

Province assembly celebrates the Dehonian charism, Year of Mercy

“Fellowship, prayer and substance.” This is how organizers of the 2016 U.S. Province Assembly described the purpose of June 6-10 SCJ gathering held in Hales Corners, WI. No elections, no administrative business, no statements to produce, no agenda other than to come together, in fellowship, for prayer and substance.


500 years of religious life!

On June 6 the US Province celebrated the religious jubilees of Fr. Michael Burke, SCJ and Fr John Czyzynski, SCJ (60 years of vows with the Priests of the Sacred Heart); Fr. Frank Burshnick, SCJ, Fr. Joseph Dean, SCJ, Fr. Joseph Doscher, SCJ, Br. Benedict Humpfer, SCJ and Fr. Gregory Speck, SCJ (50 years); Fr. Charles Brown, SCJ and Br. Frank Presto, SCJ (40 years); Fr. Vincent Suparman, SCJ (30 years); and Fr. Duy Nguyen, SCJ and Fr. Greg Schill, SCJ (10 years). Fr. Ed Kilianski, SCJ, provincial superior, was the main celebrant and homilist at the Jubilee Mass. Fr Stephen Huffstetter, SCJ, general councilor, and Fr. John van den Hengel, regional superior of Canada, were among the concelebrants.

Time to start writing!

In May, Fr. Vien Nguyen, SCJ, received his Master’s Degree in Theology and his S.T.L. (Licentiate of Sacred Theology) from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley. He actually completed the comprehensive exams and coursework for the degrees over a year ago; it was a necessary stepping stone toward his doctorate in Biblical Studies. After spending the past year completing the last of his doctoral coursework he will now move toward his final step on the path toward a doctorate: his dissertation.
