The Dehon Formation Community in Chicago is home to an international community of professed SCJs and those discerning religious life with the congregation. It houses the initial formation programs of the province and also welcomes SCJs from around the world on sabbatical or in graduate programs. Integrated into the program is the Novitiate, located just 15 minutes south of Sacred Heart Monastery. Read the vocation stories of our students and SCJs!

“To be a missionary you must have an open heart; you must love”

“I never think of myself as a missionary,” said Fr. Christianus Hendrik, SCJ. “I just came here to help.” Fr. Hendrik was the October First Friday presenter at the Dehon Formation Community in Chicago. Originally from Indonesia, he was asked to share what it means to him to be a missionary. Fr. Hendrik serves in rural South Dakota in the congregation’s first mission in the United States.


Province creates new healthcare position

Just over a year ago, Mary Balistreri began working at Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake serving as a health care resource to the SCJ community. A registered nurse, Mary has an extensive background in gerontology, health care assessment and in-place health care assistance. Now her role has extended to the entire province, serving as a resource to SCJs of all ages.

Happy anniversary!

On September 21, the feast of St. Matthew, the Sacred Heart Community at SHML honored Fr. Paul Casper (60 years), Fr. Ed Griesemer (60 years) and Fr. Johnny Klingler (50 years) for their anniversaries of priesthood ordination. Friends, family and SCJs filled the Good Shepherd Chapel.

SCJ both victim and aid worker following earthquake

As attention focused on the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the people of southern Mexico were struggling to recover from a massive earthquake that happened late on September 7. Among those affected was Fr. Francisco VanderHoff Boersm, a Dutch SCJ who lives and works among indigenous people in Oaxaca.
