SCJ Memorial Day

November 26 is commemorated throughout the congregation as “SCJ Memorial Day,” a time to remember in a special way those SCJs who have given their lives in ministry. Among them were Bishop Joseph Wittebols and 27 other SCJs who died during the 1964 Simba rebellion in the Congo.

The Dehon Formation Community

The Dehon Formation House in Chicago is home to an international, intergenerational, community of professed SCJs and those discerning religious life with the congregation. The community not only houses the initial formation programs (candidacy, novitiate, philosophy and theology) of the province but also welcomes SCJs on sabbatical or in graduate programs. In their own words, they share a bit about themselves and their vocation stories.

Major superiors meet to prepare for next general chapter –– planning committee chosen, dates set, and other details in process; former provincial superior continues to post blog entries from his visit to South Africa; prayer requests; and remembering on Veterans Day those who served in the military.


“Who are we called to be today?”

They have often been referred to as the “Senate of the Congregation,” the major superiors (those in-charge) of the over 40 entities of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. Approximately every two years they come together to be in dialogue with the general curia about common issues of concern. Meeting from November 3-9 their primary topic this time was the 2015 general chapter.
