Brazilian SCJ reflects on his homeland prior to World Youth Day

Fr. Willyans Prado Rapozo, a Brazilian SCJ who ministers in Toronto, Canada, was recently interviewed about his homeland by “Salt and Light,” a Toronto-based media outlet. The focus is on Brazil because of the upcoming World Youth Day gathering in Rio de Janeiro July 23-28.

Celebrating the end of a successful year

In 2008, SCJs partnered in ministry with the diocesan parish of St. Paul near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The population that surrounds St. Paul is made up primarily of factory workers and young migrant families. The families come for jobs, but often do not earn enough money to send their children to school. In 2000, St. Paul rented a small parcel of land and put up four classrooms.

Brazilian SCJ reflects on growing protest movement

A protest movement that began in mid-June is spreading throughout the major cities in Brazil. Initially organized to protest increases in bus, train and metro ticket prices, concerns now include the need for better health and education services and an anger toward a sense of corruption in government. Fr. Gilberto Heleno, SCJ, a professor in Brazil, recently commented on the movement.
