Praise our Lord, Jesus Christ!
With these words from staff to children, summer camp returned to St. Catherine’s Church in Big Bend, SD. The camp was begun by long-time pastoral minister Sr. Charles Palm, OSB, but was discontinued when she retired (Sister died in 2023). “However, thanks to the loving efforts of volunteers and donors, members of the St. Catherine community revived the camp as a way to nurture children’s faith and build a community of believers,” said Sr. Grecely Tangcogo, MCM, director of this year’s edition.
The camp – held July 27-31 – opened with a Eucharistic celebration led by Fr. Floribert Bulo, SCJ. In his homily, he reminded the campers that God is good and God LOVES children.
“At first, Jesus’ disciples tried to stop the children who wanted to come to Him,” said Fr. Floribert. “However, Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to Me.’ Jesus invites children because God is good; He loves everyone without distinction, including children. Today, we begin our summer camp. Let us rejoice and come closer to Jesus.”
During the five days, children participated in activities designed to deepen their faith and shape their character. They prayed together, played games, sang music, painted, and danced. “Some of our prayer took place on the banks of the beautiful Missouri River,” said Fr. Marius Saputra, SCJ.
“It rained in the morning, so we thought it would be impossible to be by the river,” said Sr. Grecely. “However, by God’s grace, the weather cleared up and allowed us to rejoice by the riverside. God is truly good.”
Approximately 20 local youth took part in the camp. During the closing Mass, Fr. Marius reminded the children that “gratitude and faith are the keys to a happy life, just as St. Paul said, ‘I can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.'” (Phil 4:13).
At the end of the camp the children presented a small concert, reflecting on the lessons learned during the week. Parents and chaperones responded with thunderous applause.
“I don’t want this to end,” said one camper after another.
“I am so happy here. I made new friends.”
“I learned to play music.”
“I learned to pray with my friends.”
These are just some of the words shared by children taking part in the camp. It was hosted by members of the Lower Brule Pastoral Team and the St. Catherine parish community.
