50th annual powwow

This weekend, September 17-19, St. Joseph’s Indian School in South Dakota will celebrate its 50th Annual Powwow. St. Joseph’s powwow is unique in that it is for kids and teens.

Approximately half of the student body takes part in the powwow, joining youth from neighboring communities. Powwows celebrate connections to tradition and spirituality, to the Earth and to one another in a social, personal and spiritual meeting.

Visit the school’s Facebook page now and throughout Powwow Weekend to view videos, photos and news clips from events.

Dehon Book Club

Fr. Joseph Mukuna, SCJ, director of the Dehon Study Center, writes that “Our Dehon Book Club meetings will resume on October 2, 2026. We will begin reading selected materials from Fr. Van Hai Ngo’s book, Léon Dehon: Spiritualité du Cœur du Christ et engagement sociétal (Leo Dehon: Spirituality of the Heart of Christ and Social Engagement).

“Since the book is written in French, I will provide an English translation of the section we will be reading and discussing. I will send those materials to participants soon.”

To register for the October 2 meeting, and to receive the materials for it, please contact Fr. Joseph at:

Outdoor Mass

As a young priest in Poland, Fr. Karol Wojtyła, later Pope St. John Paul II, famously organized wilderness outings with youth and university students. During these excursions, he often celebrated Mass using an upturned kayak or canoe as a field altar. On Sept. 18 at 5:00 p.m., Fr. Ziggy Morawiec, SCJ, SHSST vice rector, will celebrate an outdoor Mass in the tradition of the pope on the grounds of Sacred Heart. Dinner will follow. The Mass and dinner are a part of Sacred Heart’s alumni gathering.
