Mercy and Fr. Dehon

Staff from all of the ministries of Sacred Heart Southern Missions Mississippi came together for an in-service day on February 15. The focus was “Mercy,” in commemoration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Fr. John van den Hengel led the group in a reflection on “Mercy and Fr. Dehon.” “Compassion and mercy belong to the Kingdom of God,” he said. “You can’t speak of mercy and compassion without God… What ties us together is God’s mercy.”

Favorite color? What makes you happy? What are you good at? What is your greatest fear… “Twenty Questions” is a regular feature in which SCJs and those with whom they minister and collaborate share a bit about themselves in an informal Q&A format, each answering 20 questions. Fr. Bernie Rosinski, our first 20Q feature, is a member of the SCJ community in South Dakota where he is a very active retiree. Among his previous jobs: vice general secretary in Rome and provincial secretary here in the US Province.

Former general councilor says it was “love” that called him to the SCJs

Fr. Albert Lingwengwe was novice master for the Congolese Province when he learned that he was being considered for general administration in Rome. “Never for a moment did I think that I would work in Rome, moreover, as a member of the General Council,” Much to his surprise, he was elected to the council in 2009; he completed his term last summer. Now on a study sabbatical in the ESL program at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology, he recently, he sat down to reflect on his vocation, service in administration, and the SCJs’ impact on Africa, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This morning, as I handed the statue of the Infant Jesus to someone to carry up to the manger, I thought to myself, “This is each child I teach. Jesus is divine and human, body and soul, corporal and spiritual. So, too, are my students,'” wrote Sr. Margaret Sue Broker, a teacher at Sacred Heart School in Southaven, MS. “…The act of teaching is an amazing corporal and spiritual work of mercy.” Click here to read Sr. Margaret Sue’s full reflection.
