With heavy hearts, we join people around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. He leaves behind a legacy of a Church that is deeply committed to mercy and compassion.
He was a voice for the poor and marginalized, hosting meals for the poor and homeless and referring to them as “nobles of the street.” He stood in solidarity with migrants and refugees at a time when many world leaders chose to ignore their plight and cries. He called upon us to protect, nurture, and care for “our common home.” Like our Founder, Pope Francis urged priests and religious to “go out of the rectory” and engage with the people to understand their lives and struggles. He reminded everyone in Church ministry not to shy away from being shepherds with the smell of sheep.
In his own way, he taught us how to live the Gospel concretely.
With faith in the Resurrected Christ, we commend his soul to the Lord.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
