“Dreamer” speaks to SCJs about DACA

Cendi Trujillo Tena, a Milwaukee resident who is registered with DACA, shared her story with Dehonians during an informal gathering at Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake on November 28. She spoke of the challenges that the undocumented face, and the need for immigration reform. "Everyone can make a difference!" she said.

Giving Tuesday

Congratulations Fr. Vien!

Congratulations to Fr. Vien Nguyen, SCJ, who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in Sacred Theology on November 14th! This is the last step in his doctoral program at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, Calif. The title of the dissertation is “Extending the Boundaries of Gender and Ethnicity in the Wilderness: a Spatial Reading of the Ethiopian Eunuch Narrative in Acts 8:26-40.”

Apostolic nuncio main speaker at Dehon Lecture

Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio, was the presenter at the Dehon Lecture Nov. 8 at SHSST. His topic: The Heart of the Priest. "“The Holy Father expects priests to have a courageous heart that engages the real problems of men and women," he said, "this requires being close to the Lord and the people."

On All Souls Day we remember…

All Souls Day is a time when the Church commemorates all the faithful departed. November is also a special time in which Dehonians celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us, culminating with November 26, SCJ Memorial Day. We begin the month with a reflection on Fr. Syrian refugees become part of Canadian mosaic

Last year Dehonians in Ottawa, in partnership with those who join the community in worship on Sundays, welcomed a refugee family from Syria. The Dehonians joined Canadians across the country in a national project to welcome, sponsor and resettle Syrians who had fled their country as it plunged deeper into a violent civil war. On October 22, the family celebrated its first year in Canada. They did so by thankingxxx

Migration continues to be top priority in North America

Twice a year the administrations of the US Province and Canadian Region meet together to discuss common concerns, areas of collaboration, and update each other on the people and ministries of each entity. The fall meeting took place October 16-17 in Montréal. Topics included migration, the international theological conference, vocations, the North American retreats, communications and the 2018 General Conference.

The Dehon Formation Community in Chicago is home to an international community of professed SCJs and those discerning religious life with the congregation. It houses the initial formation programs of the province and also welcomes SCJs from around the world on sabbatical or in graduate programs. “To be a missionary you must have an open heart; you must love”

“I never think of myself as a missionary,” said Fr. Christianus Hendrik, SCJ. “I just came here to help.” Fr. Hendrik was the October First Friday presenter at the Dehon Formation Community in Chicago. Originally from Indonesia, he was asked to share what it means to him to be a missionary. Fr. Hendrik serves in rural South Dakota in the congregation's first mission in the United States.

Province creates new healthcare position

Just over a year ago, Mary Balistreri began working at Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake serving as a health care resource to the SCJ community. A registered nurse, Mary has an extensive background in gerontology, health care assessment and in-place health care assistance. Now her role has extended to the entire province, serving as a resource to SCJs of all ages.
