Happy anniversary!

On September 21, the feast of St. Matthew, the Sacred Heart Community at SHML honored Fr. Paul Casper (60 years), Fr. Ed Griesemer (60 years) and Fr. Johnny Klingler (50 years) for their anniversaries of priesthood ordination. Friends, family and SCJs filled the Good Shepherd Chapel.

SCJ both victim and aid worker following earthquake

As attention focused on the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the people of southern Mexico were struggling to recover from a massive earthquake that happened late on September 7. Among those affected was Fr. Francisco VanderHoff Boersm, a Dutch SCJ who lives and works among indigenous people in Oaxaca.

SCJ student deeply changed by border experience

Alonso Barrantes is an SCJ candidate completing his third year of philosophy at St. Xavier University in Chicago. During his summer ministry assignment in Houston he had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. It was an experience that "deeply changed my heart," said Alonso.

Learning to use the gospel message to transform the world

Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology begins the 2017-18 school year with a significant new program in its course offerings: “Cor Unum.” Using a cohort model of education, where students work together as an educational community, participants will earn a Master of Arts degree through a hybrid instructional model consisting of classroom and online components. Students take six credits a semester, completing their MA in 22 months.

Obrigado Brazil!

Frater Juancho Castañeda Rojas just returned from his pastoral year in Brazil. "I experienced a sense of the internationality of the congregation," he wrote in a reflection on the experience. Who are the Priests of the Sacred Heart, the Dehonians? What are our values, our priorities? The Rule of Life, built on the foundation of the charism left to us by Fr. Leo Dehon, answers these questions in detail. Last year the general administration developed a Mission Statement that takes the essence of that Rule of Life and gives it focus in today's terminology.

Vietnam one year later

On August 12th the District of Vietnam will celebrate the first ordination of an SCJ within the district itself. Until now, all ordinations were done outside of the country. August 12th will also be a significant day for Fr. Francis Vu Tran. It will be the one-year anniversary of his installation as superior. A US citizen originally from Vietnam, he was asked by Fr. General to go to Vietnam.

Fr. Charles Yost dies

Fr. Charles Yost, SCJ, died July 8 at Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake in Franklin, WI. He had gone into home hospice care just days earlier. Fr. Yost was 85. "Being an SCJ definitely influences how I minister," he wrote several years ago, reflecting on his vocation. "From the SCJs I have a deep appreciation of the Mass and the Eucharist that I try to pass on to others."

Feast of the Sacred Heart

"If we put our trust and hope in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he will not disappoint; for his Heart still beats with healing and love for the world, for us.," said Fr. Ed Kilianski, US provincial superior, in his homily for the feast of the Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart Monastery hosted a feast-day celebration on June 23.

Remembering Fr. Vince

Fr. Vincent McDonald, SCJ, died June 19 in suburban Milwaukee. He was 85, professed his first vows with the Priests of the Sacred Heart in 1951 and was ordained in 1958. He served as a prison chaplain, as a chaplain to the armed services, in hospital ministry and in parish ministry.
