“The Joy of Community Expressed in Our Mission” was the theme of the 2017 Province Assembly. It began with the Jubilee Celebration on June 5 and continued through the week with presentations on a wide variety of topics including personality exploration, multiculturalism, migration and community. 18 jubilarians!

On Monday evening, June 5, the US Province celebrated the profession anniversaries of 18 SCJ priests and brothers. In total, the 2017 jubilarians represent 690 years of religious life. The celebration took place at Sacred Heart Monastery / Seminary and School of Theology.

A very BIG family

There is one Dehonian charism, but many, MANY different models of how that charism is lived. Meeting from May 13-16, continental representatives of the Dehonian Family (including lay groups, consecrated women and professed SCJs) gathered at the Generalate in Rome to take a closer look at the many expressions of the Dehonian Family and to seek a path toward a more cohesive structure.

ESL alumnus named bishop of Imperatriz, Brazil

On April 19, Bishop Vilsom Basso, a former SCJ missionary in the Philippines and an alumnus of Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology’s ESL program, was named bishop of Imperatriz in northern Brazil. Exploring common concerns of SCJs in North America

Twice a year the administrations of the US Province and Canadian Region meet to discuss common issues, seek ways of collaboration and update each other on their ministries and communities. This time it was the US Province’s turn to host; the spring meeting took place April 24 at the Provincialate Offices in Hales Corners, WI. Just weeks after his 95th birthday, Br. Gabe Kersting dies

Br. Gabriel Kersting, SCJ, died on April 7; he was 95. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., Br. Gabe worked in the Merchant Marines as a deckhand from 1942 to 1946 before following his vocation with the Priests of the Sacred Heart. He made his first profession when he was 26. He served in the province's seminaries and administration, and for over 20 years as a missionary in South Africa.

Never too old to fall in love

On March 30 Fr. Bernie Rosinski, SCJ, defended his master's thesis in Scripture at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology. In taking up his studies for the degree at the age of 79 he said that he "found his true love." The object of that love? Scripture! "It is replete with mystery; it preoccupies me."

A Lenten prayer at Speaker Ryan’s office

On March 6, four SCJs and Mark Peters, director of Justice, Peace and Reconciliation for the US Province, went to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan's office in Racine to share their concerns about the Trump administration’s executive order on immigration. Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake is within Speaker Ryan’s district and thus the SCJs meeting with him weren’t just concerned citizens, they were also his constituents.
