Honorary SCJ dies

Honorary SCJ Fr. Joseph Gole died December 8 in Milwaukee, Wis. His health had been deteriorating significantly in recent days. Born in Dubrovnik, Slovenia, Fr. Gole grew up in the town of Zagorica. He began his studies for the priesthood at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

Advent begins

December 1 marked the beginning of Advent, atime of preparation for the coming of Christ. The following prayer, taken from "This Day of God," the community prayer book for the Priests of the Sacred Heart, reflects on the Gospel reading for the first Sunday of Advent, MT 24:37-44:

SCJ Memorial Day

November 26 is commemorated throughout the congregation as “SCJ Memorial Day,” a time to remember in a special way those SCJs who have given their lives in ministry. Among them were Bishop Joseph Wittebols and 27 other SCJs who died during the 1964 Simba rebellion in the Congo.

In solidarity with the Philippine people

Responding to the tragedy of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Fr. José Ornelas Carvalho, superior general, writes the following: "It is with great sadness that we have witnessed once again the force and the devastation of extreme weather. This time it occurred in the Philippines...

“Who are we called to be today?”

They have often been referred to as the “Senate of the Congregation,” the major superiors (those in-charge) of the over 40 entities of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. Approximately every two years they come together to be in dialogue with the general curia about common issues of concern. Meeting from November 3-9 their primary topic this time was the 2015 general chapter.

Fr. Leo Dehon’s Spirituality and His Social Engagement

"Fr. Dehon's spiritual basis is an experience of God's love... a love that inevitably led him to social and political engagement," said Fr. Stefan Tertünte, SCJ. Fr. Stefan was the opening speaker at the North American Conference of the Priests of the Sacred Heart in September, 2013. His presentation is now available as a YouTube video.

Celebrating the commitment to religious life!

On September 23 the province celebrated the golden and diamond jubilees of religious life of five of its members: Fr. Johnny Klingler, Br. Peter Mankins and Fr. Jim Schroeder (50 years) and Fr. Frank Clancy and Fr. Larry Rucker (60 years). Friends, family and fellow SCJs packed the chapel at Sacred Heart Monastery/School of Theology for an evening liturgy and dinner.

Vietnamese school continues to thrive

Huong Tam School was initiated by Mrs. Dao Thi Thu Thuy, a Vietnamese citizen living in the United States, who came to visit Vietnam. She saw many children going around to collect garbage and sell lottery tickets; most of them were uneducated, they just lived with what they got on the streets. SCJs welcome two new members and a novice!

On August 14, the Priests of the Sacred Heart welcomed Justin Krenke to the novitiate. The next morning, Justin was an acolyte at the Mass where James Nguyen and Juan Carlos Castañeda Rojas professed their first vows.
