On August 12, the Priests of the Sacred Heart officially established the District of Vietnam, the congregation’s newest entity. During a morning liturgy the formal announcement of the establishment of the district, with the names of its first administration, was read. Over 140 SCJs and guests were crammed into the community chapel to take part in the ceremony.

Two years ago, the river running through Cagayan de Oro, a Philippine city on the island of Mindanao, burst its boundaries in the midst of epic rains. People were swept away in the raging waters; homes and businesses were damaged, including that of the Kasanag Daughters Foundation.

On August 3, Fr. Zolile Petros Mpambani, SCJ, was ordained as bishop of Diocese of Kokstad, South Africa. He is the second SCJ in less than a year to be ordained for episcopal service in Africa. Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna, SCJ, was ordained October 7, 2012, for the Archdiocese of Beira, Mozambique. What follows are two reflections on Bishop Zolile’s ordination.

Fr. Willyans Prado Rapozo, a Brazilian SCJ who ministers in Toronto, Canada, was recently interviewed about his homeland by "Salt and Light," a Toronto-based media outlet. The focus is on Brazil because of the upcoming World Youth Day gathering in Rio de Janeiro July 23-28.

In 2008, SCJs partnered in ministry with the diocesan parish of St. Paul near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The population that surrounds St. Paul is made up primarily of factory workers and young migrant families. The families come for jobs, but often do not earn enough money to send their children to school. In 2000, St. Paul rented a small parcel of land and put up four classrooms.

A protest movement that began in mid-June is spreading throughout the major cities in Brazil. Initially organized to protest increases in bus, train and metro ticket prices, concerns now include the need for better health and education services and an anger toward a sense of corruption in government. On Wednesday, June 5, members of the U.S. Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart elected Fr. Stephen Huffstetter, SCJ, as their next provincial superior. Fr. Steve, 54, is currently executive director of St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D.
